Gilbert Self Defense

Experienced practitioners. Responsible teachers.

Gilbert Self Defense is led by Bryan Geoffrey, Jeff Lahann, and Lance Praet, united by the belief that the art should prepare people for life.

Bryan Geoffrey — Co-Founder & Self-Defense Program Lead

Bryan Geoffrey began training in Jiu Jitsu in 2007 and has spent nearly two decades studying practical self defense and pressure tested grappling. His foundation was developed through years of training with Valente Brothers in Miami, where he continues to train as regularly as possible. Their traditional approach to self defense remains central to how he studies, practices and understands the art today.

Bryan’s experience training in Muay Thai has also influenced how he views striking, distance, timing and the transition from standing defense into clinch control and grappling. He believes jiu jitsu should prepare people for real situations, not just competition, and should develop awareness, composure, sound judgment and responsible use of force.

As a father whose children also train, Bryan is especially committed to helping young people become confident without becoming aggressive. He helped create Gilbert Self Defense to provide serious, practical training in a respectful environment where students learn how to protect themselves and carry themselves with discipline and responsibility.

Jeff Lahann — Co-Founder & Adult Program Lead

Jeff Lahann is a co-founder of Gilbert Self Defense and helps lead the adult program and the academy’s practical, disciplined training culture. His approach is grounded in the belief that martial arts should prepare people for real life—not simply help them memorize techniques.

Jeff’s martial arts background includes Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (Blue Belt), Krav Maga (Black Belt), and additional training in Tae Kwon Do, Aikibujutsu, tactical handgun use, and the Martial Blade Concepts defensive knife system. Studying across these different disciplines has given him a broad perspective on striking, grappling, personal protection, weapons awareness, and the realities of self-defense.

As an instructor, Jeff emphasizes awareness, sound decision-making, efficient technique, and the ability to respond under pressure. He works to make training technical and realistic while remaining approachable for beginners, older adults, and students who may not consider themselves naturally athletic.

His goal is not to make students fearful or aggressive. It is to help them become more capable, composed, and confident—on the mat and in everyday life.

Lance Praet — Instructor & Youth Program Lead

Lance began training Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in 2017 and has been coaching adults and children since 2020. In January 2023, he was awarded his purple belt by Ryron Gracie.

Lance is a certified Gracie Combatives instructor and Women’s Self-Defense instructor, with a strong emphasis on practical, real-world self-defense and helping students develop the skills and confidence to protect themselves.

As a coach, Lance believes learning should be challenging but also fun. When students enjoy training, they stay engaged, remain focused, and want to continue learning. He brings that philosophy to every class, creating a positive and welcoming environment where students can build confidence, improve their focus, and develop practical skills they can carry with them both on and off the mat.

You do not have to feel ready to begin.

We will meet you where you are and show you how the training works.
